Local group gives $25K to Haiti relief

Some of Guam's financially able citizens are joining the rest of the world in providing financial relief to Haiti, which lost an estimated tens of thousands to as many as 200,000 people to a recent earthquake.

The largest single Guam donor so far is the Chinese Chamber of Commerce of Guam, which handed over a check for $25,000 for Haiti relief efforts through the American Red Cross on Guam yesterday. The Chinese Chamber's donation increased to $25,700 after the ceremonial check was written.

During the same event at Adelup, first lady Joann Camacho presented an $8,000 check for Haiti relief, thanks to the roadside donation collections conducted by various government of Guam agencies. The governor and first lady's offices, Guam Fire Department, Guam Customs and Quarantine Agency, and Guam Homeland Security conducted a Haiti relief boot drive along Marine Corps Drive on Jan. 20.

Certain Guam individuals and families opened their pocketbooks.

A $5,000 check was given for Haiti relief, through the local Red Cross, on behalf of Pete Ada Jr.. his wife Fe and their real estate and investment company Ada's Trust, said P. Sonny Ada III, son of Pete and Fe Ada.

People all over the world have been captivated by news images of countless Haiti residents who were pulled out of building ruins -- some dead, some alive. News footage from various international and national media outlets showed earthquake victims stuck under the weight of concrete debris and dying slowly before help came. Injured people died without a chance of receiving medical care.

"Compassion from the images and stories that you see on TV, or any news compels you to respond -- two million people are suffering, and we are very moved by that," Sonny Ada said.

"And we chose to help through the American Red Cross Guam chapter because when Guam was devatasted from typhoons past, and the Red Cross was always there to help us."

"It's a thought-out decision. It's from the heart," Sonny Ada said of his parents' donation.

On top of the $5,000 from Sonny Ada's parents, Sonny Ada also gave $1,000, said Chita Blaise, executive director of the American Red Cross' Guam chapter.

Telecommunications company Docomo Pacific also has an ongoing Haiti relief fund drive that people can participate by texting from their Docomo phones. Each text donation means $5 for Haiti relief.

Docomo customers who will donate through texting 42484 (HAITI) will get billed on their next monthly phone statement. Pre-paid Docomo phone users will pay through a deduction from their phone load. Docomo will hand over the texted donations to the Red Cross' local chapter after the campaign, which is ongoing, ends in a few weeks.

Blaise said the Guam chapter has raised $12,000 as of yesterday, not including the $25,700 from the Chinese Chamber of Guam.

Guam's TV 8 also will help raise funds for Haiti through its participation in a two-hour global telethon that begins on Guam at 11 a.m. today, according to TV8.

The Red Cross' Guam chapter has no participation in the telethon, Blaise said.
